Five | Six Launches First Collection of Mindfully Crafted, Handmade Textiles from Côte d’Ivoire on Kickstarter
Brooklyn, NY - Five I Six, a textile company that honors the heritage of traditional woven textiles from Waraniéné, Côte d’Ivoire, is launching its first collection today exclusively through Kickstarter. Backers can secure their handmade item direct from the weavers of Waraniéné by backing the company’s Kickstarter campaign. The first collection includes one-of-a-kind throw pillows, bedspreads and tote bags inspired for your contemporary style.
Five | Six textiles are handwoven with 100% handspun cotton into narrow strips of cloth on upright frame looms. The same way cloth has been produced in this region for centuries. The patterns are created by the artisans of Waraniéné and are unique to each individual product. All of the residents of Waraniéné work as full-time weavers. The women spin, dye, and stitch the cloth while the men weave. Their children learn the process through years of apprenticeships.
The company, a collaboration between founders Emma and Laine and the weavers of Waraniéné, was started to preserve an ancient artistic practice, make goods in a mindful way that supports the artisans and their communities, and to create an elegant product unlike anything available on the market today. This partnership ensures that all Five | Six textiles come straight from the collective to your home, creating consistent employment for the artisans, increasing wages, and preserving an artistic practice for years to come. Five | Six will invest a portion of our proceeds into educational and adult literacy programs for Waraniéné in collaboration with the village’s leadership.
