Design Philosophy

DSCF0180.jpg

Five | Six Textiles is a design collaboration with master weavers in Côte d’Ivoire. We believe that traditional weaving innovation informs the present and future of West African Textiles.

Collapsing the borders between art, craft, and design, and elevating the genius of West Africa textile arts, Five | Six’s design philosophy is rooted in the conversation between weaver, cloth, and consumer.

  The Textiles

We believe the most exceptional textiles come from the artisans who originated them. That’s why we partner directly with a collective of master weavers to co-create Five | Six Textiles.

 The Natural Materials

Each textile is handwoven using the highest quality 100% raw cotton that softens and patinas through its use. A nomadic product by nature, textiles are distinguished by their portability, allowing them to tell a story through their use.

  The Design

West African textile design has always been fluid, honoring the craft, the maker, and their tradition. The Five | Six Textiles process is no different adn rooted in co-creation. Design begins with Dyula motifs - vintage and contemporary - found via the weaver’s archives and textile collections. The collaborative process begins where the artisans’ craft knowledge meets our design understanding. The artisans share histories of the motifs, their local names and meanings behind their aesthetic appearance, adding context and meaning to the textiles and in so doing, producing truly unique works of art.

 The Texture

Textiles are both a visual and tactile experience and we believe this is best realized through the experience and use of color, texture, and pattern. When designing new products, it is important to highlight the natural texture of raw cotton - similar to raw silk - to enhance the final design.
